Why do I need a will? I don't have anything of value!

Why do I need a will? – I don’t have anything of value!

Even if you think you don’t have anything of value you still have “stuff” that needs to be taken care of should you pass away.

Everyone has something.

We all own possessions.

In Australia in 2019 the average net worth of a 20-year-old was $15,000; for a 60-year-old it was over $560,000. So you might be surprised if you actually tallied up your net worth.

While you may not think that you have anything of value, you still have things that will have some worth. Do you have a bank account with savings? Do you own life insurance? Does anyone owe you a significant amount of money? Do you have any investments, or shares? Do you own a car, a motorbike, or any other personal property? How about your furniture, TV, stereo equipment, game consoles, etc.?

You might even have things that seemingly have no intrinsic value but are of sentimental value; your grandfather’s watch, an old family photograph, your collection of seashells. Things that you may wished to be passed on to a loved one, children or grandchildren.

You might even have a pet? What will happen to your companion animal? Do you want someone in particular to look after it when you’re gone?

If you have any of these things then you own something and when you die all that “stuff” needs to go somewhere.

Having a will creates certainty.

Even if you think that no one would care about your meagre possessions, those you leave behind still have to deal with those “meagre possessions”. Loved ones don’t want the added burden of trying to figure out how you would’ve wanted your things to be dealt with. You could be leaving them with a lot of problems and unanswered questions that could easily be avoided.

Having a will is important. It doesn’t matter whether you’re rich or poor. You want those you’ve left behind to have things sorted out as easily and as comfortably as possible.
